We Are The People Project, Pound Arts and Corsham Town Council invite you to a special free community get-together and Q and A Event:
‘Disability, Community and Research- what’s it all about, Corsham?’
We will have a panel of disability, education, research and community activists/experts to share experiences, un-pick issues and explain what ‘research’ is and how it can support our community:
Keynote- Dr Rebecca Yeo
Rebecca is an academic and researcher at the University of Bristol, working to build greater awareness of the injustices faced by disabled asylum seekers. Working in Disability field for many years, Rebecca began working for the UK Disabled People’s Council in 2012. Here, she began working with disabled asylum seekers and met people struggling for basic survival in the UK. Shocked to learn that neither the Disabled people’s movement, nor the asylum sector, was paying significant attention to these issues – she focused her PhD on this. Rebecca works to bring together the insights and experiences of the Disabled people’s movement with the asylum sector, to achieve a strong movement for change which would benefit us all.
Jane Boulton BEM – Springboard Chippenham
Jane Boulton is the manager of independent charity Springboard in Chippenham. Springboard works to support and promote the inclusion of children aged 0-5 years old with a learning difference or disability. Since 1985, Jane has built a career working with children who experience difficulty accessing mainstream provision.
Charlie Mitchell – Inclusion Gloucestershire
Charlie is Delivery Director at Inclusion Gloucestershire a charity that’s aim is to help achieve an inclusive society that values, respects and includes disabled people every day and in every way.
Karen Viner – Organiser at Corsham Community Club
Karen organises a community group designed to cut isolation and loneliness. Giving everyone someone to talk to by meeting for coffee and lunch, chatting and going on outings.
Karen started the group 3 years ago when she worked for a care company which enabled people to get out of the house. The need for this group is very prevalent, so, with a neighbour, Karen took matters into their own hands and started the club. Karen states: ‘It makes me feel very proud when I see the people that come with a smile on their faces. I know we have done something good within this rural area’.
We would love – Your thoughts! Your ideas! Your ears!
