Midlands-born Sam Carter is a BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist with over 15 years as a professional recording artist and international touring musician under his belt. Over the course of his career, he has earned a reputation for vivid, narrative-driven songwriting ‘as penetrating as Richard Thompson’s best work’ (Uncut). A highly regarded instrumentalist, Sam has been described as ‘the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation’ by Bellowhead’s Jon Boden, and as having a ‘killer voice’ by Ivor Novello- winning musician Nitin Sawhney.
Sam has released six albums under his own name and two albums with the BBC Folk Award-nominated folk-rock band False Lights. His impressive back catalogue and captivating live shows attest to his ability to bring together a diverse set of influences from English folksong and American shapenote singing through to hard rock. In 2012, he gave a spell-binding performance on Later… with Jools Holland, playing songs from the shape-note influenced album The No Testament, accompanied by fiddler Sam Sweeney.
This spring, Sam Carter returns with a solo tour in support of his acclaimed Top 40 Folk Chart album Silver Horizon. Recorded by renowned producer Andy Bell at the remote Red Kite Studios in Wales, Silver Horizon features 11 hook-driven indie folk songs set in a captivating, dream-like sound world. Guitarist Stuart McCallum (The Breath) weaves epic reverb-drenched soundscapes around many songs, which are simultaneously otherworldly and deeply personal. “I’m still dealing with themes of love, loss, and change that have been a part of my earlier work, but at the moment, sketching events in an impressionistic way instead of documenting them in detail gives the songs more room to breathe.” It’s this seamless blend of the intimate and ethereal that makes Silver Horizon the most remarkable album of Carter’s career.
