A ginormous thank you to all the artists for providing this magical moment. You are truly the best.
These are unprecedented times. We would ask you to support these brilliant artists by purchasing books and merchandise directly from their websites…
Arji Manuelpillai – is a poet, rapper, performer and education artist based in London and is passionate about community arts and connecting people through art. His poems are funny, irreverent, and hugely affecting in addressing the subjects of Sri-Lankan British identity, masculinity, friendship, grief and love. Grab yourself a copy of Arji’s debut pamphlet, Mutton Rolls – it’s a beaut.
Byron Vincent – remember that powerful TEDxCorsham talk in 2019 from his sick bed? Byron is a wordsmith who plays with language, and someone we’d like to bring back to The Pound again and again and again. A writer, performer, broadcaster, theatre maker and a passionate social activist with lived experience of issues around poverty and mental health. See you soon Byron.
Henry Normal – It’s been a few years since Henry performed at The Pound, but we very much hope that it won’t be too long until he returns to Corsham in non digital form with some poems. He’s a clever wit who wears that intelligence lightly. Go buy a book!
John Osborne – we had a marvellous and enriching evening with John Osborne last year, as he brought his John Peel’s Shed to Corsham to close our Blue Sky Festival. As a writer and a poet, John’s work has a winning gentleness and seductive voice that draws you in, ensnares you and captivates you, so do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of No-one cares about your new thing.
Jonny Fluffypunk – our favourite stand-up poet and susatinable nihilist. As well as writing and performing, Jonny runs poetry and performance workshops, putting shapes and colours into the minds of young and old alike. He is co-host of the West Country’s pop-up poetry gig Hip Yak Poetry Shack which came to Corsham last year. Jonny is someone who relishes writing, who’s poetry is full of intricate humour, surreal fantasy, sharp irony and wit… pick up a book or two from Burning Eye Books.
Keisha Thompson – what a delight it was to see Keisha’s award-winning and profoundly personal, touchingly funny solo show, Man on the Moon in October last year. An artist of enormous talent, whose writing is arrestingly relevant. Her debut book, Lunar, features her poetry as well as the script from Man on the Moon.
Liv Torc – joined us in Corsham with Jonny Fluffypunk last year for The Hip Yak Poetry Shack, so it’s great to welcome Liv back to our Head in the Clouds spoken word stage. A razor blade skating performance poet, who plunges the vast caverns and dormant volcanoes of the human condition. Pick up a copy of her first published book Show Me Life.
Luke Wright – we still remember that wonderful night in January, as Luke brought his powerhouse of a one-man show, The Remains of Logan Dankworth to The Pound. His performances and poetry rumble with rage, passion and humour, leaving you brimming with energy, heart pounding and brain whirring. An artist that we cannot wait to return, and that return we hope might be next year. Just a cool guy. Books, books, books available from Penned in the Margins.
Molly Naylor – oh how we wish Molly could have been at The Pound in May to perform her new theatre piece Stop Trying To Be Fantastic, but sadly we will have to wait for this one. In the meantime we can enjoy her intimate poetry, filled with hilarious observations on the minutiae of life. Whilst her latest book Stop Trying To Be Fantastic is not available just yet, you can get hold of the brilliant Badminton from Burning Eye Books.
Rob Auton – having brought The Talk Show to The Pound last year, Rob was due to return earlier this year in April with his latest uplifting offering, The Time Show. Rob is a poet/writer/talker who performs with eccentricity and charm and who is entirely compelling and a total joy to watch. Another poet who has a collection of books available from Burning Eye Books.
Rosy Carrick – we had a blast with Rosy in September 2019, with her playful, audacious and superb theatre piece Passionate Machine. Rosy’s poetry is equally quick-witted, charismatic and full to the brim with surreal and disgusting imagination, Rosy Carrick’s eccentric style, dense rhyme structures and forceful imagery cementing her place as one of the UK’s most unusual and exciting contemporary poets. Find out for yourself by buying a copy of Rosy’s wonderful poetry collection, Chokey.
Sean Mahoney – sadly Sean was not able to bring his new show to The Pound in June. But we very much hope that Back of the head with a brick will work its way to Corsham in 2021. We love Sean’s voice! What he’s got to say, the way he says it and just the way he sounds. Keep an eye out for some online poetry nights with Sean and those great people at Strike A Light.
Toby Thompson – no introduction needed for this chap, but what a moment this is, recorded live on lockdown in a Normandy garden… Cheers Toby! Beautifully inspiring wordsmithery displaying his delight in life’s uncertainties and absurdities and his uniquely rhythmic and musical style is lyrical, beguiling, playful and poignant. Toby has a wonderful gift for language, a deep sensibility and a penetrating sense of perspective.
