Kenneth Branagh’s intimate and deeply personal reflection on his childhood experience in 1960’s Northern Ireland focuses on impressionistic nine-year-old Buddy, as he navigates his away towards adulthood during a time of sweeping socio-political change. Recalling classic coming of age tales such The 400 blows, 2019 Oscar winner Roma and John Boomans Hope and Glory, the story provides a child’s eye view on an adult world, as Buddy tempers the turmoil of The Troubles with his vivid imagination and love of cinema. Meticulous in its attention to period detail and unapologetically nostalgic in its depiction of community spirit, it’s blessed with some wonderfully wry and witty dialogue, much of it from Dame Judi Dench as Buddy’s doting Granny. The cinematography may be black and white, but the characters are full of colour.
