Breach Theatre and The Albany presents
The team behind It’s True, It’s True, Its True, are back with their hilarious, heart warming docu-drama about a group of elderly women who form a Spice Girl tribute band to earn a quick buck when one friend can’t pay her bills.
Anita finds herself in financial difficulties when her shifts as a cleaner are cut. In her late 70s and without any computer skills, the prospect of finding another job is slim and pressure is mounting with the council sending threatening letters about outstanding debts. When her best friend Joan spots the letters, she decides to get the rest of their group involved in forming a Spice Girls tribute band to get Anita out of trouble. They hope to earn a quick buck by providing an alternative to the sold-out Spice Girls tour in a South London pub. They must learn to sing, dance and look the part in the lead up to the final performance. Wannabe follows this process of transformation, along with the everyday obstacles that they face as older working class women in austerity-era Britain.
Wannabe is produced by Breach Theatre and commissioned by The Albany Theatre as part of their Festival for Creative Ageing, and is supported by the LUSH Film Fund.
