A beginners’ session to help you try Catherine’s loose “gravity painting” watercolour techniques. Step-by-step, form your own impressionistic river scene from a photograph (supplied). Watch the way paint dropped into water behaves. Use fewer brushstrokes and more water effects to create bright colours and atmosphere.
We will start by looking at how reflections form on the water surface and talk about preserving the white of the paper to depict the white and cream highlight of the boat.
We will then break down our composition into manageable chunks and make a plan of our painting on the page in light pencil. Next we will start to build up paint to create depth and shadows by dropping in deep colour. As the soft, wet-in-wet features dry out, we can add in drier, crisper detail to the floating boat with our finer paint brush, as well as wash or “lift-off” paint to form subtle shapes.
We will end with some troubleshooting tips including ways to review our work.
