ARTIST STUDIOS AT THE POUND
The Pound introduces the first three resident artists in the newly refurbished incubator spaces. The studios are intended for emerging artists as a supportive base in which to establish their practice for up to three years.

Artists will be opening their studios to the public every Wednesday and by appointment.  They will offer a programme of workshops and events through the year. Claire Baker is a contemporary ceramicist and Christopher Dunn an illustrator and fine artist.

Claire Baker’s work is made as a response to a lifelong passion for Victorian china and chintz. Large pieces are slab built recreations of drawing studies. Smaller pieces are press moulded directly from her collection of vintage crockery. Each piece is fired a minimum of 5 times, layering each time with slips, oxides, glazes (including volcanic), decals and lustres. Discover more about Claire’s work through her website: bakerart.org.uk

Chris Dunn graduated from Bath Spa University in Illustration and has been working as a freelance illustrator and fine artist, producing illustrations for business publications and book publishers. His reputation as a fine artist in watercolour has also developed with successful entries into the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, the Bath Prize in 2011 and in 2012, he won the Minerva Prize and Young Artist Prize at the Bath Artists Society Open. Visit Chris’ website for further information: www.chris-dunn.co.uk

Penney Ellis is a concept-led artist and her work has a specific emphasis on community and environment. She seeks opportunities to work with and within communities to encourage participation, social engagement and pride of people and place. Her work has taken the form of photography, film, installation and art commissioned for the public realm. Alongside her creative practice, she delivers digital photography workshops and courses to encourage and enable people of all abilities to discover new opportunities for creative photography.

The Pound established a pilot studio space in June 2009. As a result of the pilot and after securing funding from Wiltshire Council, Arts Council England, The Landfill Communities Fund from The Hills Group Limited through Community First, the Community Council for Wiltshire, The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Late Lord Methuen’s Charitable Trust, and individual donors, three studio spaces and a community workshop space have been created at the arts centre.
